Genghis Khan also known as Chinggis Khan (1162 – 18 August 1227) was the founder and Khan (leader) of the Mongol Empire which became the largest contiguous empire in history. Born as Temüjin, he united the nomadic tribes across northeast Asia to establish the Mongol Empire. As the Great Khan of the empire, he started the “Mongol invasions” which resulted in the conquest of a great portion of Eurasia. A huge number of people were killed during the course of his invasions, however, he also made positive contributions by granting religious freedom to his subjects, abolishing torture, encouraging trade and developing the first international postal system.
