Confucius (September 28, 551 – 479 BC) was an influential Chinese philosopher, teacher and political figure during the Spring and Autumn period in the history of China. He was born as “Kong Qiu” but was commonly referred to as either “Kongzi” or “Kongfuzi” (meaning Master Kong and Grand master Kong respectively) throughout Chinese history.

Confucius believed that leader should practice self-discipline to maintain humility and be compassionate with his followers. By maintaining these practices, the Leader would be able to lead through positive example.
Confucius was known to be the first teacher in China who promoted the availability of education to the majority. He defined learning as not just a method to acquire knowledge but also a way to build good character. It was said that during his early thirties, Confucius visited Lao Tzu, author of the famous “Tao Te Ching” and the curator of the National Archives in Luoyang at that time.
